It’s no secret that Garth Brooks is a big fan of Billy Joel. So when Joel was one of several artists honored this year during the 36th Annual Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony, it made perfect sense for Brooks to appear and perform.

The annual ceremony, which took place earlier this month but was broadcast on CBS this past Sunday (Dec. 29), highlights artists for their lifetime contributions to American culture. Also honored this year were Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, opera singer Martina Arroyo and actress Shirley MacLaine.

Brooks has previously appeared at these events to perform in honor of previous recipients Loretta Lynn and George Jones. For this year’s ceremony, he performed two Joel songs. Watch them below:

The annual event takes place at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. It always features star-studded tributes to the honorees, who don’t participate in the ceremony but watch from the balcony along with the President and the First Lady. Music legends are often celebrated at the event, and previous recipients include Led Zeppelin, Buddy Guy, Paul McCartney, Smokey Robinson, the Who and Dolly Parton.
