From the way things appear in his new video for “It Goes Like This,” Thomas Rhett is in love.

Rhett’s latest single is a straight-up love song with a cheerful, summer-friendly beat that keeps it lively, fresh, and always on the move. ““Hey girl, you make me wanna write a song,” he sings in the opening line. “Sit you down and sing it to you all night long.”

“It Goes Like This” takes a far different tone from the last Rhett creation you probably heard on the radio. Jason Aldean’s “1994,” with its goofy Joe Diffie chorus (which had Aldean falling out of his chair laughing when he first heard it), was co-written by Rhett, along with Luke Laird and Barry Dean.

Rhett has a solid reputation as a songwriter. He’s penned songs for Aldean, Lee Brice and others, as well as co-written his own previous hits “Something to Do with My Hands” and “Beer with Jesus.” But he didn’t actually have a hand in writing “It Goes Like This.” Credits instead below to Ben Hayslip, Jimmy Robbins and Rhett Akins. Funny how it works like that sometimes.

At least, though, the songwriting in this case stayed in the family. That’s because Akins happens to be Thomas Rhett’s father.

Akins had a hit recording career of his own during the 1990s and early ’00s (“Don’t Get Me Started” topped the charts in 1996). Akins and Hayslip are also two-thirds of the hit songwriting trio the Peach Pickers, who (with Dallas Davidson) have penned numerous hits including Blake Shelton‘s “All About Tonight,” Brooks and Dunn’s “Put a Girl in It,” and Luke Bryan’s “I Don’t Want This Night To End.”

And getting back to the question of love: if Rhett is feeling it in this video, there’s good reason for that. He married Lauren Gregory (pictured with Rhett, above) last October.

Thomas Rhett is currently on tour with Jason Aldean.
