Does Taylor Swift Throw Away Fan Mail Without Reading It?

When a Tennessee woman came across a glittering rainbow in a recycling dumpster last weekend, she was shocked to find that the colorful papers were actually hundreds of unopened letters addressed to Taylor Swift.

“I was like, ‘That’s weird,'” Nashville resident Kylee Francescan told Nashville news station WKRN. “There were like hundreds of letters in there to Taylor Swift and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ I didn’t know if they were stolen [or] discarded, so I threw them in a box. And I’m like, ‘Somebody needs to let Taylor know.'”

The letters were addressed to the pop star’s fan mail address, a P.O. located in a strip mall in Hendersonville, Tenn. According to WKRN, the owner of the strip mall said that someone from Swift’s team comes periodically to collect the thousands of letters she receives from fans around the world every day.

However, the mystery remains as to why the letters landed in a dumpster unopened. A spokesperson for Swift, Paula Erickson, said the letters must have been overlooked or improperly sorted.

“The only explanation for any letters being unopened would be that a small batch of mail that was supposed to be delivered to Taylor was accidentally put with letters headed for the recycling center,” Erickson told WKRN. “…We plan to immediately pick up the mail.”

While Erickson said that most fan mail is opened, read and recycled, the singer does hold on to many of the keepsakes fans give her, like a glittery heart made of puzzle pieces from around the world.

Not only have fans written to Taylor, but they’ve scooped up the many magazines that Swift has graced over the past year. According to E!, the singer pushed above-average magazine sales with her 2012 covers, reaching well into the thousands. Her February Vogue appearance sold 329,371 copies, with Glamour selling over 443,000 magazines in November and Harper’s Bazaar selling 138,412 copies of their December issue. In 2013, she has already been featured on Elle‘s March cover and is gracing newsstands on Vanity Fair‘s April issue now.
