In honor of Mother’s Day this Sunday (May 13), we asked a couple dozen country artists to share the best advice their mothers ever gave them. You may be surprised at some of the answers, but not so surprised that many of them followed it. After all, ‘momma knows best!’

It seems a consensus that many successful country artists had very supportive mothers. Miranda Lambert‘s momma, for instance, told her to “know who you are and stick with it”. So as she tells us, “I’ve done that in my life and in my career and it’s really been great advice.”

Before moving to Nashville to pursue his dreams in music, Rascal FlattsJoe Don Rooney says his ‘momma’ told him “you’ll never know unless you go, you have picks in your pocket and dreams in your head – go for it.”

She must have been on the same page as fellow Flatts bandmember Jay DeMarcus, whose mother gave him the advice to “never lose your faith in God and never, ever give up on your dreams.”

By the same token, Cherrill Green of Edens Edge listened when her mother told her, “If you can dream it, you can do it!”

Phil Vassar says the reason he moved to Nashville was because of the advice given to him by his mother. “My mom always told me to do what you love to do. Do what makes you happy. And follow your dreams no matter what other people say about it.” So move to Nashville he did, and “everybody thought I was crazy.”

Then there is the more specific, immediate advice some artists’ moms have given. Besides “stay in school,” Jack Ingram‘s mom gave him advice to “break up with that girl! She’s bad news!” He tells us “that girl was bad news! A lot of fun. . . but bad news!!!”

Chuck Wick‘s mom’s best advice, or at least the advice that stuck with him, has a familiar ring: “Chuck!!! Put the toilet seat down!!!”

How many moms have given the advice Randy Houser remembers? “Wear clean underwear. . .you never know,”, she told him; and then she added, “and a bunny suit.” We’re not sure what that last part meant, but it was his recollection of his mom’s best advice.

Although Uncle Kracker‘s mom apparently has a great sense of humor, as he tells us, the “best advice my mom ever gave me…’go ugly early.'”

Josh Kelley advice from his mother that was a bit more serious. “Before I’d leave to go out the door she’d say, ‘PUT A RAINCOAT ON IT!!!” “And I always did…haha.”

Josh Gracin‘s mother told him, “No matter what, the woman’s right…even if she’s not, let her be…because at the end of the night you’ll be glad [you] did.”

Colt Ford tells us, “My Mamma always said ‘God never gives you anything he does not intend for You to use.'” He must have listened, as this hard-working country/rap artist says he has a new record done that is the “best thing I’ve done.”‘

Below is more motherly advice, shared by some of your favorite country artists:
